After spending the first 18 years of my life bird hunting and fishing in the northland prairies and forests of Minnesota (going to school too), I moved west and received my B.S. in Arizona, M.S. in Nevada, and Ph.D. in Oregon—the latter while studying elk and deer on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. Ever on the road in those days, my family and I moved cross-country to Maine where I taught in the Wildlife Department at the University of Maine–Orono. In 1985, we moved to Stillwater America, as they say, where I joined the Oklahoma Unit as an Assistant Unit, becoming Unit Leader in 1989.

I grew up in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri and after having received my PhD from Oklahoma State University, went to South Carolina for my first full-time fisheries job. Afterward, I spent 7 years with the National Park Service as the fishery biologist for the southeast region. In 2009 I moved back to my adopted state of Oklahoma in my current position.
