About the Utah Unit

New York Unit student Mike Wegan, with anesthetized adult black bear captured as part of collaborative eff ort with the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum Military Installation in northern New York and New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation to assess population size, movements, and foraging habitats of bears.

Cooperative Research Units have three facets to their mission: (1) Graduate Education, (2) Research, and (3) Technical Assistance.

Each Unit consists of 2-5 federal scientists and 1-2 administrative specialists. The Unit Leader provides oversight to all Unit activities. Federal scientists hold faculty rank at their home institution, teach courses and workshops for graduate students and cooperators, and conduct research on a wide variety of natural resource topics. Research projects typically support graduate students and post-docs.

Unit Leader

John Bissonette
Dr.John A. Bissonette, Ph.D.<br />Leader, Utah Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit<br />Professor, Department of Wildland Resources<br />Utah State University, Logan, UT

John received a B.A. from the University of Vermont, a M.F.S. from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He has been Leader of the Utah Unit since 1985.
