Initial observations on zebra mussels in two lakes in the Menominee River watershed, Wisconsin/Michigan

Duration

August 2011 - July 2013

Narrative

Zebra mussels have invaded the Great Lakes and are now the vector for invasions to other inland water bodies in North America. Understanding the population dynamics and habitat preferences among a wide variety of lake and river types can provide insight into appropriate management schemes designed to minimize their effects in the aquatic environment. Small lakes in north eastern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan, proximal to the Menominee River are currently experiencing invasions of zebra mussels and perhaps quagga mussels. Research is targeting how zebra mussel populations will fare in these new environments.
