Influence of Limnological Classification on sportfish production in lakes on Georgia's Public Fishing Areas

Narrative

Currently, the lakes in GADNR’s PFA system have not been classified, and fish production among the lakes in inconsistent. Efforts to manage the lakes for trophy sportfish (e.g., largemouth bass) have been hampered by uncertainties about how the lakes differ and which chemical or physical factors may be affecting fish production. Accordingly, we propose a 2-year study to measure a suite of chemical and physical factors for lakes in the PFA system and to classify the lakes based on similarities (or lack thereof) among these variable. The objectives for this work is to assign lakes on the PFAs into classes based on their chemical and physical characteristics and to determine which class of lakes is better suited for trophy sportfish management.
